THE LAST SPIKE is a mainly pictorial history celebrating the completion of the New Zealand North Island Main Trunk Line in 1908. It highlights the final thrust to overcome the difficult challenges of the geography of the central North Island.

Supporting text outlines the stages of development of the MTL between Auckland and Wellington, and the effect of its construction and completion on New Zealand's economy and society. Included are anecdotes from people involved with or affected by the MTL, and some original letters from the time of its construction.

Photographs are mostly from the Guylee collection of Auckland Weekly News from 100 years ago.

This is designed to be a coffee-table book rather than technical. It is 150 pages, 21 x 28cm landscape and will be released in Feilding, New Zealand, in time for the Centenary celebrations, October 2008.

Early-Bird pre-order price, applicable until further notice:
